This 22-mile out-and-back along the Verdugo Mountains offers a big ridge walk with even bigger views—without ever leaving the LA basin. Starting in Burbank, the trail quickly climbs to the Verdugo ridgeline, then rolls westward to Mount Thom, a modest summit with sweeping views and a satisfying sense of distance. Despite being close to the city, this route offers plenty of solitude, open sky, and lung-busting climbs. It’s a long day hike or trail run, with the option to shorten or extend depending on your legs and mood.
From the Olivia Terrace Trailhead, the route begins with a steep, winding climb on fire roads and connector trails, gaining elevation quickly as you leave the neighborhoods behind. Once on the Verdugo Motorway, the trail becomes a wide, exposed ridge road with consistent views of the San Gabriels to the north and the LA basin to the south. You'll pass multiple junctions with trails like the Beaudry Fire Road and Vital Link Trail—good escape routes or bonus climbs if you're looking to mix it up.
Mount Thom isn’t a dramatic summit, but it makes a solid turnaround point. Marked by communication towers and a small bench, it offers a chance to catch your breath and soak up panoramic views before heading back.
