The Peters Canyon - East Ridge View Loop hike makes use of two distinct trails that run the length of the regional park. Hikers can opt to go out-and-back on either trail, or combine the two to really get a chance to explore the features of the park.
Beginning at the north parking area, the Peters Canyon Trail is clearly marked as it follows a mostly level course with a general downhill trend on a wide hardpacked dirt path, losing around 225' in elevation over its 2 mile course to the park's southern trailhead. Upon reaching the end of the trail, hikers can add a loop around the retarding basin, which follows a wide asphalt path around the reservoir lakebed.
An uphill path leaves the southern trailhead, climbing quickly and steadily to views across South Orange County. From the top, the path follows the ridgeline, climbing and dropping in a near straight line to the north. A few benches sit along the way, but you'll likely feel the complete lack of shade or shelter on the East Ridge View path. Saving the highest and steepest climb for the northernmost peak, hikers can take in the views before descending back toward the reservoir and the northern park landmarks.
Hikers should expect crowds on this multi use path, including bicyclists and equestrians. You should also come prepared as the shade and water fountains tend to be limited to the parking area and trailhead.
Hiking the Peters Canyon Trail or East Ridge View Trail requires paying a day use fee at the self-pay station inside the Peters Canyon Regional Park parking area ($3 in 2025). Outhouses, drinking fountains and trash cans are all located in the parking area. Trails may be closed due to mud following wet conditions. The park and parking area are open daily from 7am through sunset.
