Embark on a captivating 54.2-mile journey with the Piute Pass to Marie Lake hike, a section of the celebrated John Muir Trail nestled in the Sierra Nevada's high alpine terrain. This route is typically enjoyed by those who are well-acclimated to the altitude and who are looking for a moderately challenging hike amidst some of the best scenery the Sierra has to offer.

Your adventure starts at the North Lake Trailhead, easily accessible from the North Lake Campground. This trailhead serves as the gateway to the scenic wonders you'll encounter en route to Marie Lake.

The trail begins amidst a forest of Lodgepole Pines, gradually ascending to the picturesque Piute Pass. As you climb, the trail unveils sprawling meadows and invites crossings over pristine mountain streams.

Descending into Humphreys Basin, hikers are treated to expansive views that lead to the tranquil waters of Marie Lake, a perfect representation of the serene high Sierra environment and a great place to camp for the night.

FLORA AND FAUNA
Transition through ecosystems, starting with dry chaparral and evolving into woodlands speckled with pines and oaks. Keep your senses alert for wildlife including deer, various birds, and other mountain inhabitants.

PERMITS
Backcountry permits are required for overnight trips. Day trips do not require a permit. Quota season runs from May 1st - November 1st, during this time permits are limited to 30 a day.

TRAILHEAD AMENITIES AND SAFETY
With limited amenities at the trailhead, hikers must practice bear safety and store food in provided bear lockers. Remember, there is no potable water on-site, so come prepared with filtration or treatment options for natural water sources.

This trek is best suited for the experienced hiker. It demands proper gear, knowledge of the terrain, and a well-planned itinerary. Whether you're on a day hike or an extended trek, ensure you're equipped for sudden weather changes and the rigors of high-altitude hiking.
