The Salt Tram Summit Station is a historic wooden structure that sits at the highest point of the old Saline Valley Salt Tram. The tram was built between 1911 and 1913 to carry salt from Saline Valley to Owens Valley over the Inyo Mountains. It operated intermittently between 1913 and 1935 and was the steepest tramway in the country at the time and an incredible feat of engineering.

Ruins from both the Salt Tram Summit Station and the Summit House Structure remain on Cerro Gordo Road in the Inyo Mountains Wilderness. Explore this historical site in the Death Valley National Park area along backcountry dirt roads for a unique and fun hike or backpacking destination.
