Strawberry Peak via Red Box is a 7.2-mile out-and-back trail in Angeles National Forest, about an hour from Los Angeles. This moderately rated route offers panoramic views of the San Gabriel Mountains, including Mt. Wilson, the Mt. Wilson Observatory, and Mt. Baldy. The area is very popular for running, hiking, and mountain biking. It can get very crowded on the weekends, but there are still opportunities for solitude during the week.
Strawberry Peak (6164 ft.), named for its upside-down strawberry shape, is the tallest mountain in San Gabriel Mountains' front range. It's mostly exposed, so it's great for views but not great for shade. There are no reliable water sources on this route and In the summer it can get very hot.
From the Red Box Picnic Area, cross Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2) and continue northeast until you reach Strawberry Peak Trailhead / Barley Flats Truck Trail. You will follow this trail as it contours around the mountain, climbing gently above Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2). Within approximately 2.4 miles, you will reach Lawlor Saddle, which is located between Lawlor Mountain and Strawberry Peak. Take a left, head north, and follow the rugged single track trail as it ascends steeply up the east slope of Strawberry Peak.
Descend the same way you went up and retrace your steps back to the start.

RED BOX PICNIC AREA
Red Box Picnic Area is off Angeles Crest Highway at Mt Wilson Red Box Road. It has paved parking areas, bathrooms, potable water, picnic tables, and a visitor center. A lot of trailheads are located at Red Box Picnic Area, and the area can get crowded on weekends.
