Surprise Canyon is a 20-mile out-and-back trail located in the Panamint Mountains within Death Valley National Park. This unexpected, stunning, and secluded hike is nestled in a remote wilderness area, offering adventurers a rare glimpse into an oasis of lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic canyon walls. Perfect for those seeking solitude and a connection with nature, the Surprise Canyon hike is a challenging yet rewarding journey through one of the area's most picturesque landscapes. It is recommended for experienced hikers who are comfortable navigating rugged terrain within a mountainous desert environment.
The route begins along a wide and scenic dirt road. The path narrows as you ascend deeper into the canyon. Initially following a dry creek bed, it gradually narrows, winding its way between towering canyon walls. The terrain varies, with sections of loose gravel, rock scrambles, and occasional water crossings, challenging hikers to navigate carefully.
One of the hike's highlights is the series of small waterfalls and pools encountered along the way. These natural features provide not only a stunning backdrop but also a refreshing respite from the desert heat. The sound of flowing water accompanies hikers as they explore further into the canyon's depths. Toward the top of the climb and the end of the canyon, hikers will reach Panamint City, a historical ghost town and popular hiking destination and campspot.
