This 16.6-mile loop begins at the Three Points Trailhead along Angeles Crest Highway and winds through the San Gabriel Mountains to the historic Vetter Mountain Lookout. The route blends shaded forest trails, open ridgelines, and sweeping views of the San Gabriels, making it a full-day adventure for hikers and trail runners seeking solitude and steady elevation gain.

From the Three Points Trailhead, the route follows the Silver Moccasin Trail south towards Chilao Campground passing through mixed conifer forest and chaparral-covered slopes. The trail climbs gradually along ridges with occasional glimpses of Mount Waterman and Twin Peaks.

Continue toward Vetter Mountain Road for the climb to Vetter Mountain Lookout. The lookout provides panoramic views across the San Gabriel Mountains, with Mount Baldy, Strawberry Peak, and the Los Angeles Basin visible on clear days. The restored fire lookout tower is a historic highlight and a perfect place to take a break.

To complete the loop, descend via Vetter Mountain Road and follow Mount Mooney Truck Trail north, eventually reaching Angeles Crest Highway. Cross the highway, reconnect with the Silver Moccasin Trail and retrace your steps back to Three Points.

Flora & Fauna

  • Flora: Jeffrey pine, Coulter pine, incense cedar, manzanita, and black oak. In spring and early summer, look for wildflowers like lupine, mariposa lilies, and golden yarrow.

  • Fauna: Deer, gray squirrels, coyotes, and a variety of raptors. Woodpeckers and chickadees are common in the forested sections.

Permits

  • No wilderness permit is required for day hiking.

  • An Adventure Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required for parking at the trailhead.

Camping

  • Established campgrounds include Charlton Flats and Chilao Campground, both accessible from the loop.

  • Campfires require a valid California Campfire Permit and may be restricted seasonally.

Best Season

  • Spring and fall are ideal for moderate temperatures and clear skies.

  • Summer can be hot, especially on exposed ridges.

  • Winter may bring snow or ice at higher elevations, check conditions before traveling.

Need to Know

  • Bring plenty of water; natural sources are limited and often dry.

  • The fire lookout is occasionally staffed by volunteers during summer weekends.

Cell service is spotty; let someone know your route before heading out.
