Valencia and Oats Peaks Loop

The Valencia and Oats Peaks Loop tackles both Valencia Peak and Oats Peak, and instead of taking the out-and-back, our route takes the loop option by following Coon Creek on the return. This loop is 10.1 miles, beginning and ending at Valencia Peak Trailhead near Spooner’s Cove. The trip begins at the parking area off of Pecho Valley Road and at the trailhead for Valencia Peak. The singletrack trail is well marked and graded, and affords excellent views in all directions, especially as one climbs further up and further out. Reach Valencia Peak around mile 1.8, and Oats Peak around mile 3.7. From the summit of Oats Peak, the loop begins a long descent down a prominent ridge, switchbacking down to meet Coon Creek near mile 6.0. Our route continues on to the Bluff Trail, following the bluffs along the ocean back to Spooner’s Cove. For those looking for further adventure, there are a number of ways to extend this trip, such as by continuing on to Alan Peak. There is no water along the way until reaching Coon Creek, and this route is certainly exposed, so be prepared for the elements! One of the best times of the year for hiking or running this loop is in the late winter and spring, when the rains have turn these hills green and full of life.
