The Verdugo Traverse is a scenic 24-mile out-and-back journey across the Verdugo Mountains, starting from the Olivia Terrace Trailhead, heading south to Sunshine Drive, and back. This day-long adventure is ideal for experienced hikers seeking to explore the Verdugo range's full breadth, offering panoramic views, diverse terrains, and a satisfying challenge.

The journey begins at the Olivia Terrace Trailhead, where you'll start your ascent into the Verdugo Mountains. The initial climb sets the tone for a route characterized by its rolling hills, mixed terrains, and stunning vistas.

As you head south, the trail meanders through chaparral-covered landscapes, offering intermittent shade and spots to rest. You'll enjoy varied views, including downtown Los Angeles, Glendale, Burbank, the San Gabriel Mountains, and, on clear days, the distant outline of Catalina Island.

The midpoint of your trek is Sunshine Drive, marking your hike's southernmost point. Here, take a moment to enjoy the achievement before preparing for the return journey. The route back to Olivia Terrace Trailhead follows the same path, allowing you to experience the beauty of the Verdugo Mountains from a new perspective as the day's light changes.

FLORA AND FAUNA

The Verdugo Mountains are home to a rich array of Southern California flora and fauna. The chaparral and coastal sage scrub habitats support wildlife such as mule deer, coyotes, and various bird species. Springtime hikers will be rewarded with bursts of wildflowers along the trail, adding color to the green and brown tapestry of the hills.

The trail is accessible year-round however the ideal times to visit are late fall to early spring to avoid the summer heat.

CONSIDERATIONS

Mountain Biking: This area is popular among mountain bikers. Hikers should be aware of their surroundings and share the trail courteously.

Shade: The trail offers little to no shade, making it particularly hot in the summer months. It's advisable to start early in the day and bring ample water, sunscreen, and a hat.

Terrain: The trail includes both dirt road paths and primitive single-track sections. Hikers should wear appropriate footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain.
