Stretching from Squamish to north of Whistler, Garibaldi Provincial Park is an almighty natural wonder that attracts tens of thousands each year. While most enjoy Garidbaldi during the warmer, longer months, there are a couple of pockets of the park that are only accessible during the winter and early into the spring.

Situated on the eastern side of Garibaldi Lake, Burton Hut can only be reached when the length of the lake freezes. The cross-lake winter route is typically ready in January and is good through to early April. Access during the winter is via the 16-kilometer uphill trail from the Rubble Creek Trailhead. This follows the marked summer route to the Garibaldi Lake campground before making the 5-kilometre lake crossing. As you approach the shore, the allure of Burton becomes obvious as the superb long runs dropping from the surrounding peaks come into view.

The hut itself was built to provide basic shelter to backcountry skiers and mountaineers. Space inside is dedicated to cooking or sleeping. The back of the cabin features a raised platform that sleeps five, while the loft can fit six people. The kitchen features a long bench that has enough space for three people to prepare food at once, while rope and hooks provide space to dry your wet gear. Note that this is a true rustic backcountry hut; there is no electricity, lighting or heating. Water is generally available from the creek 200 meters south of the hut, and there is an outhouse 100 meters to the north.

Burton Hut is maintained by the Varisty Outdoor Club (VOC) on a first-come, first-served basis, with preference always given to VOC members. The cost to stay is $10 per person per night.
