The mouth of the Capilano River is teeming with wildlife, allowing any nature lover a great opportunity to spend a few hours in nature while still in Vancouver. Starting at the Cleavland Dam and leading all the way out to the Burrard Inlet, this short stretch of river is home to a few different salmon runs that attract fisherman from all around to its rocky shores for some world-class fishing. Chinook, coho, and steelhead salmon all run up this river at one time or another during the year. The fish are an integral part of the ecosystem. The returning fish levels are important for other species including bald eagles and blue heron that share this river valley and are dependent on the salmon corpses after they have spawned.

The Capilano Pacific Trail runs from the mouth of the Capilano River along the west bank and all the way to the Cleveland Dam, passing through Klahanie Park, Hugo Ray Park, and Capilano River Regional Park for several safe access points to the river. From the trail you will be able to see forest animals, birds, and even seals in the harbor that venture up the river for its bounty. Whether you're out for a run, walking the dog on the trail, or finding the right fishing spot down on the riverbanks, the Capilano is an excellent getaway for viewing wildlife just minutes from downtown Vancouver.
