Red Rock Canyon

The Red Rock Canyon Trail is a moderate to easy hiking option located in beautiful Muncho Lake Provincial Park. The trailhead is located approximately 2 kilometers south of the Strawberry Flats Campground, where users will find an information sign with a trail description and map. 

As stated on the signage, this is more of a route than a defined trail. Heading out from the trailhead, the trail meanders up a mostly dry creek bed, where many sections are undefined due to the natural, rocky terrain. Keep an eye out for depressions in the ground on the elevated portions of the creek bed to find areas where the trail is more defined. With that being said, if one is to simply follow the creek bed in whatever way seems easiest, it will ultimately lead to the same destination, which is a nice waterfall cut through reddish canyon walls. 

Approximately 2.5 kilometers from the trailhead the creek bed transitions into a well defined canyon with interesting rock and erosion formations. The trail's end features a 5-meter waterfall that may vary in flow depending on the time of year. It should be noted that one should not let the dry creek bed at the trailhead be a gauge for how much water is flowing upstream. For most of the summer, there is little flow evident at the trailhead, but further upstream there is good water flowing through the canyon that eventually works its way under the rocky bed of the creek and out of sight. 

Special notes: This is a great hiking option on hot days if one is looking to find shade and cover from the sun. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as caribou and moose that often frequent the area.
