Smelt Bay is a beautiful, family-friendly campground on Cortes Island nestled beside the ocean. The park facilities were almost entirely rebuilt around 2015, meaning that every site, bathroom, and the picnic shelter are in perfect condition. The beach is only a 5- to 10-minute walk away. By the beach, there are large trees for shade, a pebble beach, and views across the ocean to Quadra and Vancouver islands.

Many sites are "double sites." If traveling as a small group, try to reserve a solo campsite. Planning ahead saves some stress, as there are limited campsites on the island. Even on the remote Cortes Island, the parks can be busy in July and August. Use Smelt Bay as a hub to check out the many beaches on Cortes Island or other sights such as Hague Lake.
