Forêt Montmorency

Forêt Montmorency in Quebec, Canada is a wildlife refuge with remote cross country ski and snowshoe trails. This trail network is located just a half hour north of Stoneham, Quebec and just under an hour north of Quebec City. The Montmorency Forest is owned by the University of Laval and, in addition to being an outdoor paradise, is a leading research facility for forestry and geography. Known for early snow (both natural and stored), extensive trail networks, excellent grooming, and ample wildlife sightings such as moose, this is one of the best cross country ski areas in the East.

The vast trail network circles Lac Piché by the starting lodge, while also branching deeply into the Quebec forest, with classic and skate tracks surrounded by tall evergreen trees. The initial 2-kilometer loop opens very early for Nordic skiing, as snow is stored under a layer of sawdust throughout the summer then used the following season. This area is also well known for natural snowfall and often receives 6 meters of snow in a winter season. The trails are very well marked, and maps can be obtained at the trail center.

Skiers can stay in the nearby towns of Stoneham or Quebec City, or find lodging at many other options even closer to the ski trails. Forêt Montmorency offers large chalets, cabins located on the ski trails, and housing in the main Pavilion building where meals are served and there are rooms for families or athletes to enjoy games such as pool or puzzles.

In addition to nordic skiing, visitors can enjoy snowshoeing and backcountry skiing on Quebec-made wooden skis with skins that can be rented at the center. There are designated trails for many different winter activities.
