Big Bluestem and Meadowlark Loop is a long but easy hike located  in Bluestem Prairie Open Space near Colorado Springs. This hike explores a large area of the open space. This lollipop loop is 8.3 miles long and gains 278 feet of elevation.

This hike starts from Bluestem Prairie Open Space Trailhead. There are no amenities at the trailhead. Begin hiking east on Big Bluestem Trail. You will be traveling parallel to the south shore of Big Johnson Reservoir. The trail is mostly flat for this portion. After 0.4 miles, the trail turns to the north. You will now be walking parallel to the eastern shore of the reservoir. It is common to see prairie dogs along the trail here. Bluestem Prairie Open Space is also popular for bird watching.  As you travel on the trail, you will notice a few informational signs Throughout the hike, you will have great views of Pikes Peak and various other Front Range peaks.

After another 1.6 miles, you will come to a junction. Turn left here onto Meadowlark Loop. You will now be hiking north of Big Johnson Reservoir. After 0.5 miles on this trail, you will begin hiking uphill on a gradual but sustained slope. After 1 mile of slight uphill, you will begin heading downhill. The trail will be passing through an open prairie. After another 1.2 miles, you will begin hiking slightly uphill again. This lasts for 0.7 miles. Then head downhill again. Another 0.7 miles will bring you to a junction. This junction marks the end of the loop. Turn left onto Big Bluestem Trail. Retrace your steps from earlier to return to the trailhead.

Bluestem Prairie Open Space is open for hiking year round from 5am-9pm. There are no associated fees to hike here. Dogs are not allowed on this trail.
