The Blackmer Trail is a year round path that takes non motorized users to a viewpoint near the summit of Emerald Mountain. The trail is a wide dirt road and is popular with hikers and mountain bikers during the summer months. During the winter the trail is groomed and open to anyone including walkers, snowshoers and skiers.

There is limited street parking at the trailhead off Fairview Drive. From here you’ll begin the ascent.

The trails climbs steadily but never too steeply. You’ll first walk past the small Howelsen Hill Ski Area. Looking behind you’ll have great views down to the valley below and toward the Steamboat Airport.

The wide trail continues working its way up the hill. Along the way you’ll pass several side trails providing options for further exploration.

The trail finally comes to an end at a stellar viewpoint. You’ll be overlooking Steamboat Springs and have a fantastic view of the ski resort and Mount Werner.

It is possible to continue on one of the side trails up to the true summit of Emerald Mountain if you wish. Otherwise, return the way you came back to the trailhead to finish the hike.
