This 21.3-mile lollipop loop in Pike National Forest offers a mellow, scenic tour of the Buffalo Creek Recreation Area, weaving together segments of the Colorado Trail and Little Scraggy Trail. The loop features a mix of open granite slabs, pine forest, and wide singletrack, making it a great weekend backpacking trip or long day hike for trail runners and hikers alike.
Start from the Buffalo Trailhead and head east on Segment 3 of the Colorado Trail. The trail gently climbs and dips through burned and regrown forest, offering wide views of the surrounding foothills and rock outcrops. Eventually you will reach the Little Scraggy Trailhead.
From here, take the Little Scraggy Trail (FSR 765) south toward Kelsey Campground. This section rolls through pleasant pine forest and granite ridgelines. When you reach Kelsey Campground, take the loop’s return leg by continuing north on the Little Scraggy Trail, completing the loop back to the Colorado Trail.
Once back on the Colorado Trail, head west and retrace your steps to return to Buffalo Trailhead.
Expect ponderosa pines, scrub oak, and areas of exposed granite. Burn scars from past fires have opened up views and allowed wildflowers and young aspens to take root. Keep an eye out for deer, foxes, and raptors soaring overhead.
Camping & Water
Dispersed camping is permitted along much of the route—follow Leave No Trace guidelines. Kelsey Campground has established sites and may have seasonal water, but water sources along the trail are generally scarce. Carry what you need or check conditions with the Forest Service.

No permits are required for hiking or camping in this area. The Buffalo Creek area is popular with mountain bikers and backpackers, expect to share the trail, especially on weekends.
