Steamboat and Black Sulfur Springs are located right next to each other in downtown Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The springs are well worth the short stroll to check out. Note that these are not hot springs for soaking. If you want to soak check out nearby Hippie Hot Springs, Old Town Hot Springs, or Strawberry Park Hot Springs.

Steamboat Spring has special significance as this is the spring that gave the city of Steamboat Springs its name. Early French Trappers discovered this spring and its chugging sound reminded them of a paddle wheel steamboat, thus giving the eventual townsite its name.

Steamboat Spring also once had a geyser that would erupt, similar to geysers in Yellowstone. Unfortunately the geyser and the spring’s famous chugging sound were forever altered due to construction of the railroad tracks here.

Lastly, Black Sulfur Spring is located here as well. It is one of the coolest thermal springs in the area, and has an inky color as its hydrogen sulfide is turned into sulphur.
