You are here
This adventure offers a strenuous hike with a relaxing finish at the hostel and farm of Mundo Nuevo. The journey starts from, Santa Marta, the oldest colonial city in Colombia. Take a colectivo to the small and quaint town of Minca. Once in town take the road directly in front of the police station. It is possible to hire a driver up to the hostel if needed. If you are walking, the road forks a couple of times; if you feel lost, just ask one of the kind locals for direction to Mundo Nuevo. There are also many little signs directing your way to Mundo Nuevo. Continue up the hill, where you will pass a few different hostels and farms. About three-quarters of the way up the hill there will be a farm on the right that grows the food for the vegetarian hostel of Mundo Nuevo.
Take the tour around the farm viewing local Colombian bee species and mountain-side farming techniques. Continue up the hill for a stay at Mundo Nuevo. This is a great location to start many different adventures. Dinner and lunch are 15,000 cop ($5) and well worth it. Stay the night and enjoy the sunset over the city of Santa Marta and Minca. For the hike, continue to the right of the kitchen toward the Candelaria. Go directly up to the building and look for a small sign that says Pozo Azul. This path will take you through local mountainous communities and over a bamboo bridge. Continue until you see the dirt road and take a left. About 0.5 miles you will arrive at Pozo Azul. This fantastic refreshing pond is a great place to hang out for a few hours and relax in the cool water. Local traffic can be heavy. When finished, continue down the main road to Minca, where an inexpensive lunch can be found at a restaurant. Then make your way through Minca and back to the hostel to enjoy the hammocks, sunset, and vegetation dinner.
