The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a famous footpath that stretches 2,200 miles across 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. This section, Springer Mountain to Neel Gap, marks the very start of the trail. To access Springer Mountain you can hike the 8 mile Approach Trail form easily accessible Amicolola Falls State Park, or hike the 1 mile from the more difficult to access Springer Mountain Trailhead.

Once you’ve found your way to the summit of Springer, enjoy the view and be sure to sign the register hidden in the rock by the plaque. The Appalachian Trail then descends gently from the summit. Springer Mountain Shelter is located just down from the summit via a short side trail to the right. There are also campsites here.

The AT continues a gradual descent until Three Forks. From here ascend gently alongside Long Creek. A worthwhile short detour leads to Long Creek Falls.

Continue onward, passing the side trail to Hawk Mountain Shelter. You’ll hike across a couple of Gaps where the trail can be accessed by gravel roads.

Justus Creek is a highlight, a lovely stream with some camping nearby. Gooch Mountain Shelter (a bit off trail) and Gooch Gap are next, then Woody Gap. GA 60 crosses the AT here, providing easy access to the trail. This is also a popular trailhead with day hikers.

Enter the Blood Mountain Wilderness and begin climbing. A fantastic viewpoint awaits at Big Cedar Ledges. A brief descent then leads to a camping area near Lance Creek, and then onto Jarrard Gap. Jarrard Gap marks the start of a seasonal bear canister requirement, from March 1st to June 1st. This requirement stretches from here to Neel Gap.

The big climb up to the summit of Blood Mountain is next. At the summit you’ll find a stone shelter. Just down form the true summit is an opening and fantastic viewpoint. A steep and occasionally rocky descent leads to Neel Gap where there is an outfitter, and busy road. This marks the end of this section.
