Hiking over the large snowfield and avalanche debris during early May. It can be a tough approach once the trail ends, but you always have that stunning view pushing you forward.

A perfectly picturesque boulder, this was captured on the first ascent of Crooked Hook (V11) on the beautiful Arkenstone Boulder. This boulder is best in early season when the snowpack flattens out the landing considerably.

Anywhere you are, you can clearly see the headwall of Byron Glacier looming halfway up the mountain. The ice caves are located near the dark blue crevasse at the toe of the glacier (and the bottom of this image). Always exercise caution near the ice caves

The most striking boulder of The Goods area (and arguably the whole Valley), the Erotics boulder features some excellent lines, including this unsent project right up the center of the overhanging face. It is currently being projected by a local climber.

The first boulder problem established in the valley and still perhaps the most classic. Glacial Erotics (V4) is nothing if not appropriately named.

Located in huge talus fields, the landings are all pretty poor on the Byron boulders. The best days are ones with lots of friends and a whole pad party, such as this day on Dirty Little Mistress (V6) on the Erotics boulder.

Exercise caution with footing at all times. Especially at the edge of the snowfield, juicy postholes lie in wait to break unsuspecting ankles.

Makin' Out and Taken Out (V3) located in The Goods on the Ego Boulder. This climb should be a staple in your warm up routine.

The surprisingly weird Sundial (V2) located on the Shadows Boulder of The Goods. Just right is the mega area classic, Shadow of Time (V4).

Working the moves of unknown V6 not in the guidebook on the right arête of The Arkenstone boulder. Once the snow melts, you can see the landing becomes considerably worse.

A group of boulderers exiting the major middle snowpack onto the main talus field. The Erotics Boulder lies at the top of this field, but the rest of The Goods just on the other side.

Though the trail into the valley is all but flat and hiked frequently by flip flop wearing tourists who have just gotten off cruise ships, do not mistake that for meaning the entire approach is easy. Like all climbing in Alaska, you have to work for it.

You'll be hard pressed to find more beautiful bouldering shots than you will at Byron.

Looking back at Byron Glacier from the edge of the Outer Limits. The large boulder in the right mid-ground is the classic Allspark Boulder.
