Setting out into the Lamar Valley on a snowy day. Even when the weather isn't clear, the trail is still breathtaking.

As you approach the small plateau on which most of the trail runs, you'll likely encounter a huge herd of bison. The trail passes to the left and generally skirts around the masses, though you still may need to do some minor rerouting.

In the winter, bison cluster in the valley of Soda Butte Creek next to the east entrance road. The running water and thermal features provide some warmth and access to food through the winter months.

From the top of the plateau, you can get great views of the bison herd without getting too close. Still, some bison will stray onto the plateau and you should be mindful to kee your distance.

This trail marker marks the intersection between the Lamar Valley foot trail and the Lamar Valley stock trail. While you can loop the stock trail back to a different parking area not far from your original one, it's not recommended.

Bison aren't the only animals you may encounter on this trail. Elk are also common, albeit in smaller numbers and far more skiddish.

Exiting the plateau on the return journey is the steepest hill you will encounter on this trail. The difficulty on this trail comes from breaking trail and navigating a rarely skied area.

The Lamar Valley is Yellowstone's premier wolf territory. No wolf sightings on this day, but did catch sight of a coyote hunting for dinner.
