Hamrar is one of the largest campgrounds in Iceland with 14 individual camping fields that span approximately 6 hectares (14 acres). It is located in Eyjafjörður, a small town at the southern end of Akureyri, at the edge of the Kjarnaskógur Forest and under rock cliffs at the base of Súlur. There are excellent facilities and recreational opportunities including swimming, boating, and hiking. The whole area is about 45 hectares (111 acres) and operated by scouts in cooperation with the Town of Akureyri. It is open all year, and a camp warden is on site from May 15 to October 15.  (If the camp warden is not on site in low season, please call +354.863.0725.)  Additional information about Hamrar, including their most recent tariffs and fees, can be can be found on their website and facebook page. Please respect the following campground rules: Do not light fires, and respect the peace between 24:00 and 8:00.

Near the entrance there is a service house with the office of the warden, a shop, toilets, showers, cooking facilities and a dryer. There is also a living room here with TV, computers, and electrical outlets. There are six additional sanitary facilities with potable water throughout the camping areas, two of which have showers. (Several of these service huts are retrofitted with wheelchair accommodations.) Additional restrooms and showers are added during peak season to help keep everyone clean and happy. Electrical hookups are available along with special adapters that can be purchased at the warden hut. There is also a camper lavatory disposal and water refill station. Each of the camping fields is named after tree species that grow locally such as larch (Larix), poplar (Populus), birch (Betula), and willow (Salix). This area has been farmland since the first settlement in Eyjafjörður, and the scouts regularly plant trees in the surrounding forest.

While the land has been used for activities over many years, it was formally opened to campers in the summer of 2000. Each year, Hamrar works to fulfill the criteria of VAKINN, an Icelandic Tourist Board with a holistic quality and environmental framework for Icelandic tourism. Thousands of campers visit throughout the year including individuals and families, schools, and corporations. There is frisbee golf, giant foosball, minigolf, and ice skating.  The Brunná River cuts through the campsite and has been dammed to create ponds for swimming and small water craft. (Please note that children are not allowed to be near the water unsupervised.) Scouts provide exceptional service to these grounds and are responsible for much of the construction of these recreational areas.
