This 47.5-mile loop begins and ends at the Grandjean Trailhead, showcasing some of the best scenery in the Sawtooth Wilderness. The route winds through rugged alpine terrain, passing waterfalls, crystal-clear lakes, and high mountain passes. Along the way, hikers will visit Redfish Lake and Stanley Lake, traverse deep forests and exposed ridgelines, and experience the remote beauty of Idaho’s backcountry.
DESCRIPTION
Start at Grandjean Trailhead and follow the South Fork Payette River Trail, gradually climbing through dense forest along the river. After several miles, connect with the Redfish Creek-Baron Creek Trail, passing the cascading Baron Creek Falls before reaching the stunning Baron Lake. Continue upward over Baron Divide, where sweeping views of jagged peaks and alpine basins reward the effort.
From the divide, descend toward Redfish Lake, a picturesque spot with opportunities to rest and refuel. Just before reaching the Redfish Lake Trailhead, turn north to connect with the Alpine Way Trail. This scenic section traverses rolling terrain with panoramic views of the Sawtooth Range before linking up with the Iron Creek-Stanley Lake Trail.
Follow the eastern shore of Stanley Lake, taking in its striking mountain backdrop, before continuing onto the North Fork Baron-Sawtooth Lake Trail. This section climbs through rocky landscapes and passes the iconic Sawtooth Lake, a highlight of the route. From here, rejoin the Redfish Creek-Baron Creek Trail, retracing your steps over Baron Divide and eventually returning to Grandjean Trailhead.
FLORA AND FAUNA
The trail winds through dense lodgepole pine and Douglas fir forests, with vibrant wildflower meadows appearing at higher elevations during the summer months. Alpine lakes and streams attract marmots, pikas, and mule deer, while black bears occasionally roam the lower elevations.
