Aside from being the main boat launch spot between Hood River and The Dalles, Mayer State Park has two key attractions: the scenic upper plateau is the trailhead for the exceptional hike to Tom McCall Point, and the portion along the Columbia River has several swimming holes and sun bathing spots. There are also opportunities for windsurfing, picnicking, boating and fishing. Unfortunately, camping is not allowed at this little roadside state park. If you would like to camp nearby, check out Memaloose State Park to the west, Deschutes River Recreation Area Campground to the east and Columbia Hills State Park on the Washington side of the Columbia River. Each offers some pleasing options.
