The Upper Campground is one of two drive-in campgrounds at Temperance River State Park. The Upper campground is located just northeast of the Temperance River near the park office. This campground has a total of 40 sites. There are 18 sites that have electric hookups with 30-amp service. There is one wheelchair accessible site with electricity in the Upper Campground. There are three sites that are tent only cart-in sites. The campground is wooded so most of the sites have good shade. The northeastern most loop (sites 20 to 38) of the campground offers the most privacy with good separation and trees and thick vegetation between sites. Some of these sites have Lake Superior views.
Each site has a fire ring and a picnic table. Firewood is available for sale at the park office as well as from private sellers near the park. There are three sites that are pull-throughs, the remainder are back-in sites. Some sites can accommodate RVs up to 60 feet in length. Dogs on a leash are allowed in the campground, except in the restroom.
The campground has a modern bathroom with showers as well as three vault toilets. There is not a dump station at Temperance River State Park, but the city of Silver Bay, which is 27 miles away, does have a dump station. The campground is open from mid-March until mid-December, but the bathroom and shower building is only open from mid-May through September.
Campers can access the shore of Lake Superior and the Temperance River via short trails. Many hiking trails and the paved Gitchi Gami State Trail are easy to access from the campground.
In addition to the camping fees, there is a fee to enter the park; a day use or annual permit can be purchased at the park office. All the sites can be reserved online or by phone. Temperance River State Park is a very popular park, so camping spots get reserved quickly.
