The Sacajawea Memorial Area is located within the Lemhi Pass National Historic Landmark. Lemhi Pass marked a significant achievement for the Lewis and Clark expedition when, in August of 1805 they crested the pass and reached the (then) western edge of U.S. territory.

The memorial area is day use only, with a handful of picnic sites featuring picnic tables and fire rings. There is also a vault toilet.

There is a short paved trail with several interpretive signs that tell of the history of the area. The main attraction here is the “Most Distant Fountain.” Lewis called this small spring the “most distant fountain of the waters of the mighty Missouri.” Today visitors can “bestride” the Missouri headwaters on large stones placed for this purpose.

Be sure to check out some of the other historical areas while around Lemhi Pass while you are here, including the Westward View Vista Point.
