An essential place to visit in Namibia is Deadvlei and Sossusvlei, "vlei" translates as marsh. Deadvlei is a white clay expanse that is scattered with tree skeletons that are believed to have died approximately 800 years ago. They are now charred to a dark brown color by the intense sun exposure. Deadvlei should be an essential part of anyone's visit to Namibia due to its mysterious nature and iconic beauty. In fact, it might even be worth planning your trip around this visit. The pictures speak for themselves!

In terms of access, Namib-Naukluft National Park (the park in which Deadvlei and Sossusvlei can be found) is a few hours drive west of Windhoek. There is a campsite at the entrance to the park in the Sesriem settlement, which is ideal if you're hoping to visit at sunrise and can stay the night before. This campsite will need to be booked online in advance to avoid dissappointment. A roughly 45-minute drive from the campsite will take you from the Sesriem gate to Soussusvlei. On the way you'll pass Dune 45 and Sesriem Canyon. The last few kilometres of the drive to Sossusvlei are on sand, and so a robust four-wheel drive vehicle is required. People have been known to get stuck in the sand here, so do make sure you have a robust four-wheel drive vehicle with low range. It's defintely required! Alternatively, you can complete the last part on foot if you're up for the challenge. Guided tours do depart from the Sesriem gate, so if you don't have a suitable vehicle, it's still possible to visit the sites at a higher price. Once at Sossusvlei, Deadvlei is approximately a 10-minute walk across the dunes. Be sure to check the opening times of the park when you go because they change as the time of sunset changes.

The unique tranquility offered by Dead Vlei and Soussusvlei means that they are sites that simply cannot be missed!
