The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a famous footpath that stretches 2,200 miles across 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. This section, stretching from Bly Gap to the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center), is one of the most spectacular of the southern AT. You’ll walk through the beautiful Nantahalas with many incredible views to be had from the summits with lookout towers.

From Bly Gap you’ll leave Georgia behind and begin climbing into North Carolina. After Deep Gap the trail makes a semi-circle following the ridge of the Nantahalas. Standing Indian (a short side trail leads to the summit) and Albert Mountain are highlights of this section.

The trail then descends to Winding Stair Gap. The town of Franklin is commonly accessed by thru-hikers from here.

A climb from the Gap leads to Siler Bald, the summit of which is just off trail. Wayah Bald is next, with a unique stone lookout tower on the summit. While the view is spectacular, don’t expect to have it to yourself as you can drive here.

Wesser Bald is the last highlight of this section, with a large observation tower with an open deck. The views from here are spectacular. If the weather is clear, one could potentially even cowboy camp on the platform for an unforgettable night.

A massive descent then awaits. This section ends at the NOC where hikers can enjoy lounging by the river and eating at one of the restaurants. A small store also provides a basic resupply, and lodging is available.
