The Appalachian Trail (AT) is a famous footpath that stretches 2,200 miles across 14 states, from Georgia to Maine. This section stretches from the NOC (Nantahala Outdoor Center) to Fontana Dam.

The NOC is easily accessible by vehicle or shuttle, and provides an enjoyable place to hang out alongside the Nantahala River, relax, and prepare for the massive climb that awaits.

You’ll gain 4,000’ as you make your way up to Cheoah Bald. Enjoy the view from the top, as you’ve earned it!

The trail then descends, ultimately to Stecoah Gap. This is a busy road crossing.

Another climb awaits, then the trail stays high with the occasional view through the brush.

Finally, a big descent takes hikers to Fontana Lake. The Fontana Marina is just to the right of trail here and offers a small store with snacks and drinks. The AT then continues onward to the Fontana “Hilton” - one of the nicest shelters along the entire trail.

Next is Fontana Dam itself. A small visitor center is located on the left. You’ll then walk across the impressive dam, with incredible views out across Fontana Lake on one side, and hundreds of feet down to the Little Tennessee River on the other side.

This marks the end of the section. If counting onward, you’ll be entering Great Smoky Mountains National Park after crossing the dam - make sure you have the proper permit.
