The hike to Deadman Overlook takes you from the outskirts of Alamogordo up into a quiet canyon before emerging at an epic viewpoint perched atop the meeting point of two canyons.

The hike begins on the popular Alamo Canyon trail, though at about .6 miles in, reaches a fork where the path begins climbing along the much quieter Deadman Canyon. The sunlight illuminates the wildness of the lower canyon just above where the San Andres range reaches the valley floor. Beyond the fork, the path begins climbing a ridge offering a look down into Deadman Canyon before wrapping around.

A short walk leaves the main path, heading to the stony point perched right above where Deadman and Alamo canyons join. With blue skies in the distance and the lights of southern Alamogordo coming on at dusk, the overlook makes an epic spot that makes the hiker really feel the smallness of their spot in the mountains.

While short, hikers should be prepared for some rocky slopes in an area with no shade for most of the day and the likelihood of high winds.

There are no amenities of any type at the trailhead or along the hike. The gates and trail begin at the back of the water plant beside the gravel parking area.
