Along with the Little Apache Loop, the Fir Loop Trail is one of two paths accessible from a parking area just inside the Silver Campground area of the Lincoln National Forest above Cloudcroft.

At 2.5 miles, the Fir Loop path follows a winding course through the forest as it descends into a camping area before climbing a wooded section and finishing with a section along the paved campground road.

The trail - marked with blue blazes that also sign the route during snowy conditions when cross country skiers take to its course - winds its way through the densely wooded forest. While the path is easily accessible via a large parking area along with being a short walk from several of the area's campgrounds, the downside is that the path never really feels like it ventures that far away from development. The path parallels the highway for a short portion, and then passes through a camping area for another portion.

Overall, the Fir Loop Trail offers a nice wooded walk for those looking to explore the trails further out from Cloudcroft's more centralized collection of paths.

Hikers should be aware that bathrooms and water at the parking area and campgrounds are closed during the off season months.
