The Upper Cedar Creek Loop is the longer of several hikes in the area, giving hikers and bicyclists the chance to grind their way up a sloped path in the seasonally residential area of Ruidoso, before winding back down toward the creek and trailhead.

At 4.1 miles, the Upper Cedar Creek Loop is the longer of the loop paths within the area's network of trails. Many of the area's paths were built with mountain bikers, equestrians and hikers in mind, so the trail tends to weave and wind its way through the trees, gradually gaining in elevation. Along the way, it passes several trails that are restricted to bicyclists only, however the Upper Cedar Creek route winds its way above most other trails before topping out with extensive views of the surrounding mountain peaks through the trees.

The dirt single track offers a nice forest trail route, and it feels as if it leaves the town behind and climbs its way to a vast sense of space. While these trails tend to see visitors on weekends during peak season, those visiting during other times may just find themselves completely solo on the paths once they leave the lower area.

Hikers can opt to visit one of several other trails in the area. There is dedicated parking, however no amenities like water or bathrooms are availabe along the hike.
