Roper Lake State Park sits like an oasis of recreational opportunities near the town of Safford, Arizona.
Perched in a valley below the shadow of Mt. Graham Roper Lake State Park contains hiking trails, campgrounds that cater to all types of visitors, covered picnic areas, and a lake for fishing, boating and swimming. For those interested in fishing, Roper Lake contains crappie, channel catfish, largemouth bass, red-ear and rainbow trout. Boats and paddlecraft, with the exception of oil-powered boats, are permitted on the water.
Roper Lake Campground contains three separate paved camping loops - one for tent and vehicle campers, one for RVs, and one with cabins available for rent.
There are multiple dedicated day use areas with covered picnic areas, grills, showers, fishing access, and horseshoe pits. Island Day Use Area has a protected swimming cove.
In addition, there are multiple hiking trails such as a flat path that circles the lake, and the Mariah Mesa trail that has a bit of elevation gain as it heads a short distance to an overlook point.
The entrance station has a small market and gift shop. Roper Lake State Park was once a popular destination for natural hot springs enthusiasts who would visit the stone cemented pool filled with hot water, however the pool has been permanently closed.
Roper Lake State Park is open daily 6am to 9pm from October through April, and 4:30am to 9pm May through September.
The entry fee to Roper Lake State Park is $10 per vehicle, which includes same day entry to Dankworth Pond State Park located about three miles away.
