The Basalt Kilns are a unique historical attraction that is well worth a stop if traveling through the area. The kilns are found in a residential neighborhood at the end of Elk Run Drive, next to Arbaney Park.

The 7 large kilns were constructed in the early 1880s because of a demand for charcoal. Pinion Trees were plentiful in this area near the confluence of the Fryingpan and Roaring Fork Rivers, which was why this location was chosen.

A small settlement of tents and shacks grew around the kilns and became known as Frying Pan Junction.

Unfortunately the need for charcoal didn’t last long as coal was soon discovered in the Spring Valley area. The Kilns stopped producing in 1887. The town of Basalt now owns the property and the historic kilns.
