This 18.9-mile loop offers a deep dive into the otherworldly landscape of the Oregon Badlands Wilderness east of Bend, Oregon. Connecting several of the area’s major trails—Flatiron, Tumulus, Badlands Rock, and Castle—it forms a long but mellow loop through ancient juniper groves, lava formations, and open desert plains. This is a great option for experienced hikers looking to cover serious mileage in a starkly beautiful, rarely crowded landscape.
Begin your hike at the Flatiron Trailhead, following the Flatiron Trail through juniper and sand. At the end of the Flatiron Trail you’ll reach Mazama Ash Trail, turn right. Follow Mazama Ash Trail into the heart of the badlands eventually connecting with the Tumulus Trail. Next, you’ll take the Tumulus Trail to the Badlands Rock Trail, a wide trail that traverses to a large rock outcrop with 360-degree views of Central Oregon.
From Badlands Rock, continue onto the Castle Trail, heading west and then south as it wraps around the western boundary of the wilderness. The Castle Trail eventually reconnects with the Flatiron Trail, bringing you full circle back to the trailhead.
Expect plenty of western juniper, sagebrush, and bunchgrass, with occasional views of the Cascades on clear days. You might spot jackrabbits, deer, coyotes, and raptors riding the thermals. In spring, wildflowers add a splash of color to the desert palette.
