This out-and-back backpacking route begins at McGill Campground and traverses the Mount Pinos region of Los Padres National Forest. With alpine forests, sweeping vistas, and rugged solitude, this 42-mile trek offers a rewarding challenge for experienced backpackers.

Start at McGill Campground and head up the McGill Trail through shaded pine forest. Several backcountry campgrounds along the way make great options if you want to break the hike into more relaxed days. Continue along a mix of singletrack and dirt road, heading west toward the summit of Mount Pinos (8,848 ft). On a clear day, views may include the Sierra Nevada, Central Valley, and Channel Islands.

From the summit, continue west on the Vincent Tumamait Trail, traversing high ridgelines. Take the San Emigdio Mesa Spring Trail and follow it to Toad Springs OHV Route (22W01), winding through forested valleys and open ridges before reaching Toad Springs Campground.

Toad Springs Campground is a primitive backcountry site with seasonal water and flat, shaded space for tents. After camping, retrace your route back to McGill Campground.

Expect to pass through diverse habitats including Jeffrey pine, white fir, manzanita, and mountain mahogany. Wildlife sightings may include deer, bobcats, gray foxes, and numerous bird species such as Steller’s jays and soaring raptors.

Camping & Water

  • Toad Springs Campground is undeveloped—no toilets or tables, but a seasonal spring is nearby (always treat water).

  • Dispersed camping is allowed along the Vincent Tumamait Trail—practice Leave No Trace.

  • Water is limited. Streams and springs can dry up, especially by late summer. Contact the Los Padres National Forest ranger station for current conditions.

Considerations

  • This route involves significant elevation gain and extended time at altitude—come prepared for long days and shifting weather.

  • Trails may have blowdowns, brush, or snow, especially in spring—check conditions before you go.

  • No permits are required at this time, but parking or forest regulations may apply. Confirm with the Mount Pinos Ranger District.

  • Cell reception is limited—carry a map, GPS, and emergency contact device if possible.
