The Laguna Pinkerton Loop is an extension of the network of multiuse and walking trails throughout Elk Grove, this one having a main point of access at Pinkerton Park.
The trail is an easy walk, with half of the loop on a gravel path offering views of the Laguna Creek wetlands, and the other half tracing a paved multi use path that is great for families and is also wheelchair accessible. Beginning along the Laguna creekbed at the back of Pinkerton Park, a short dirt path descends and then climbs the opporsite bank where it joins a gravel path that heads east bounded by the often dry creekbed on one side and a wetlands area on the other. While neighboring parks and housing developments lie in the near distance, this trail remains lightly used and you'll most likely find yourself alone while hiking here.
Upon reaching the wetlands, a variety of bird species might often be spotted in the water. While they can also be heard amongst the reads, unfortunately the sound is fairly drowned out by the nearby traffic. The wetlands area is the highlight of the trail, while the remainder of it is a flat path circling the creekbed. In 2025 this creekbed is undergoing active rehabilitation, so please stick only to the trails in this area.
Return to the park on the paved multiuse path as it weaves along the edge of a quiet neighborhood.
Water and bathrooms, as well as shaded lawns and benches are available inside the park. There is very little shade along the remainder of the hike. Those looking to connect to Elk Grove's further trail network can follow the paved mutliuse path a short distance to connect with the Laguna Creek Trail.
Parking is in the neighborhood across the street from the park. Note that the curbside area along Pinkerton Park is a bicycle lane with No Parking Anytime signs posted.
