The easy walking trail through this section of the Amargosa River combines easy access and a scenic path along a flowing section of the river that is often hidden for most of its course.
The Amargosa River flows for 185 miles from its nearby headwaters just north of Beatty before ultimately ending up in Death Valley, however most of this flow is beneath the ground, with only a couple year round above surface sections. This section of the river between two mountains is one in which the flowing waters can be seen, in addition of colorful trees and lush flora supported by the waterway.
The walk is marked only by an unsigned parking area along the highway across from Bombo's Pond. Visitors can open a gate to access the parking area - please be sure to close the gate behind you. From here the path leaves through a green metal gate before shortly looping down to the stream's side. The use path parallels the waterway, with the adjacent colorfully banded mountains offering a dramatic backdrop. Following the flowing water upstream, schools of Amargosa speckled dace might be seen darting through the waters.
At the northern end of the small preserve, the path continues through another closed gate. Beyond this fence, the water disappears again beneath the surface following dry conditions, but several washes empty into the stream, and can be explored. This area also offers shaded canopies during the spring and bursts of color in the autumn.
Retrace your route - making sure to close all gates behind you - through the preserve.
While the trail is generally lined with rocks, storm or flooding conditions might affect the wash, however the route is easy to follow.
Area conservancy efforts can be seen, hopefully helping the health of this section improve into the future.
There are no amenities, water or even signage along this trail, though the features here make this an easily accessible hidden gem along the Amargosa.
