Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreation Area is a park area that offers a variety of recreational opportunities and amenities along the Colorado River a short distance south of Laughlin.
The park's main attraction is its two miles of shoreline along a bend in the river. As it lies just downriver of the Davis Dam, the water tends to remain clear and cool, offering swimming and a boat ramp for river access. Parking lies along the shore, providing quick and easy access to a couple sandy beach areas and covered picnic tables.
Life jackets are offered on loan for free in the park, and fishing is permitted in other areas of the Recreation Area.
Additionally, there are several trails inside the park, including the .9 mile Big Sandy Trail that passes through the park's interior sandy environment, and the 1.75 mile Swift Water Trail that heads through an empty and mostly undevleoped area of the park far away from most of the crowds. Trailheads for each of these paths can be found adjacent to the central bathroom building inside the campground.
The park's spacious campground features 24 sites, many of which can accommodate RVs, that operate stictly on a first come, first served basis. In addition to the primary camp sites which have covered picnic tables and fire rings, there are also walk up camp sites with no amenities aside from a picnic bench.
While the park maintains a pretty quiet feel during the off season, summer months do tend to bring capacity crowds filling the beaches and campgrounds as well as lots of boating activity in the river.
The park is open daily from 7am to 5pm with extended hours from March through October. Entrance fees are $10 per vehicle with Nevada plates/ID, and $15 for non-NV vehicles.
