Archie Briggs Canyon Natural Area provides stunning views of a dramatic stretch of the Deschutes River, as well as several prominent Cascade Mountain peaks in the near distance. To access the natural area you’ll need to hike in. The two best options are via the Deschutes River Trail starting at Sawyer Park, or via the Archie Briggs Canyon Trail.

The Archie Briggs Canyon Trail will take you through the entirety of the Natural Area. The Deschutes River Trail then leads to two different viewpoints.

You’ll be able to see the Deschutes River far below as it makes a sweeping bend through a canyon with walls of volcanic rock.

Prominent Cascade peaks including Mt. Washington, Mt. Jefferson and Black Butte are visible from here. You’ll also be able to see across the river to the flat grasslands of Riley Ranch Nature Preserve.

There are a couple of areas with a bench to sit and enjoy the views.
