This short loop hike along the Deschutes River Trail is known as the Mill A Loop. It is an easy stroll that provides some scenic Deschutes River views, and also leads to the Old Mill District. The hike can be extended if desired.

The Mill A Loop can be started from several different points. In this guide we’ll start from McKay Park and hike in a clockwise direction.

After finding a place to park, you’ll cross the Deschutes river via footbridge. This bridge gives you a bird’s eye view of Bend’s Whitewater Park, a series of waves that kayakers and surfers enjoy during the summer months.

After crossing the river turn right. You’ll walk through a beautifully painted underpass, then continue alongside the Deschutes River. At one point there is a nice wooden dock area for river access.

The trail then passes the Old Mill District with its many shops and eateries. You’ll turn right and cross the river via the flag bridge (you’ll know it when you see it).

The Mill A Loop then skirts around the Bend Amphitheater before following Southwest Shelvon Hixon Drive back to McKay Park where you started.
