The Flatiron Trail is a 10.2 mile out-and-back hike located in the Oregon Badlands Wilderness that leads deep into high desert terrain, offering wide-open views, fascinating volcanic rock formations, and the quiet solitude of twisted juniper groves. The Flatiron Trail has minimal elevation gain and is ideal for hikers looking for a peaceful, moderate-distance adventure just east of Bend, Oregon.
Start at the Flatiron Trailhead off Central Oregon Highway and follow the sandy, well-marked trail into the heart of the Badlands. The terrain is mostly flat but can be soft in places, making the miles feel longer—especially on a warm day.
You’ll wind through old-growth juniper, pass volcanic rock gardens, and walk through wide stretches of sagebrush.
Flatiron Rock—a broad, eroded lava outcrop is a highlight and a feature that gives the trail its name. Scramble up the rock for panoramic views of the Cascades, the Oregon desert, and the surrounding wilderness. This route can be easily adjusted, made shorter or longer, depending on where you turn around or what additional trails you’d like to explore.
This hike features classic high desert vegetation: ancient western juniper, sagebrush, bitterbrush, and bunchgrass. Wildlife sightings may include mule deer, jackrabbits, coyotes, and a variety of hawks and songbirds. Lizards love sunning themselves on the dark lava rocks.
