South Ice Cave is located just off Forest Road 22 within the Deschutes National Forest. This unassuming area features a couple of dispersed campsites, and an old vault toilet (enter at your own risk!).

There is an information board at the parking area. Be sure to read the info on white nosed bat syndrome if you are planning on entering the cave.

There is a wooden fence around the cave area, with a short trail leading to the cave opening.

South Ice Cave is a quarter mile long lava tube. As the name suggests, you’ll likely find ice if you explore into the cave, as cold winter air flows down into the cave and gets trapped there. It is reported that spring is the best time to see ice formations.

Even if you don’t wish to explore inside the cave, it is well worth a stop to view the cave from the outside.
