The Sun Lava Trail is a mostly multi use path between the town of Sunriver and the Benham parking area along the Deschutes River recreational corridor.

At 4.3 miles round trip, the generally flat trail is popular for all ability levels, and is part of a larger network of multi use and single track hiking and biking trails throughout the area, not to mention the sandy river beaches, paddling put ins, waterfalls and volcanic landscape destinations that are accessible via these trails.

Beginning at the north end of the vacation home community of Sunriver at a small parking area, crossing the gravel road and tracing a dirt path will lead to the paved multi use path. This trail winds its way through the forest on a well maintained and smooth path. All trail intersections are well signed, and you'll likely encounter everyone from group bicycle rides to families with strollers to other hikers and runners along the trail.

Upon reaching the large wooden bridge spanning the Deschutes River, the trail cuts into the forest on a dirt track, heading toward the Benham Falls East Trailhead and parking area. There are bathrooms, picnic benches and calm river access for you to dip your feet here if you'd like, as well as other short trails including the Deschutes River Trail in case you're looking to create a loop hike back to the parking area.

Hikers should be aware that the Sunriver Trailhead parking area only has room for a few vehicles and street parking is not permitted throughout most of Sunriver.
