For those of us from Portland, getting a nice soak in a natural hot spring doesn't need to be a part of a full weekend getaway. These hot springs are just a short drive from town, or for that matter within a few hours of the city, which is plenty of time to get there and back in a day.

Bagby Hot Springs

Reaching Bagby Hot Springs is a worthwhile hike by itself that meanders through towering old-growth fir and cedar trees. The hot springs can be busy, but the crowds diminish as the weather cools. Nudity here is common, but technically it is only allowed in the private bathhouses. There is a $5 fee.

Breitenbush Hot Springs

Breitenbush is a long-time Oregon establishment north of Mount Jefferson. There are three main soaking pools at varying temperatures in addition to smaller tubs at the well-maintained facility. The hot springs at Breitenbush are part of the larger community retreat and conference center, and they cost from $15 to $28 per day to use.

Carson Hot Springs Resort

The traditional bathhouse at Carson Hot Springs Resort is fed by the natural mineral waters of St. Martin springs. The hotel was built in 1901 and the bathhouse was completed in 1923, and it remains well maintained for visitors to the spa today. Make a reservation before visiting the bathhouse by contacting the resort.

Other Soaking Pools In and Near Portland

If you are looking for a great winter soak but want something closer to the city (or in it for that matter), there are also some excellent options for a soaking pool just around the corner. The Common Ground Wellness Cooperative (clothing optional) and McMenamin's Kennedy School (clothing required) are both in NE Portland. McMenamin's Edgefield in Troutdale and Grand Lodge in Forest Grove also have relaxing soaking pools and spas.
