Canyon de Chelly National Monument has limited access to the floor of the canyons, and most areas can only be reached with a Navajo guide. The rim roads are wide open, though, and both the north and south roads have spectacular overlooks with great views of the canyon. On the North Rim Drive, the Antelope House Overlook is not to be missed. Upon reaching the parking area, it is a bit of a walk across sandstone with some steps to reach the fenced overlook. The view from here is marvelous in every direction. The real fun of this spot, though, is the large, mostly flat sandstone cap of the canyon walls that invite exploration. In both directions from the official overlook there are faint paths to a number of flat spots to view the curves of Canyon de Chelly. These cliffs are extremely dangerous, and it is imperative to watch children carefully and to keep pets leashed.
