If you're not camping, the only place to stay at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is the Grand Canyon Lodge. Perched at the rim of the canyon, this National Historic Landmark has spectacular views from its outdoor decks and through the massive windows in the great room and the dining room. The building is a dark structure built of native timber and Kaibab limestone that just oozes history and the ambiance of an old hunting lodge from the Teddy Roosevelt era. Though the original 1927 lodge was destroyed in a fire, it was rebuilt in 1937 using much of the same stone work and in the same style. It is the last remaining intact lodge/cabin complex in the national park system.

There are three classes of cabins and two motel buildings, all of which are rustic. The basic cabins are rustic, and the higher-priced "Western" cabins have fireplaces, more room between units, a location closer to the main lodge building, and better views. The motel units are the furthest from the main lodge, but still not far. From the lodge, it is a short walk to the end of Bright Angel Point or to the campground via the Transept Trail. There is a saloon that converts to a coffee shop in the mornings and a full dining room with a varied and interesting menu. Being the only non-camping accommodation inside the park on the North Rim and having a short season, the lodge is extremely popular. Reservations can be made 13 months in advance, and for those looking for more than an overnight or whose dates are not flexible, the earlier the better.
