This backcountry campsite is located right next to Granite Rapid on the Colorado River in the bottom of the Grand Canyon. If you seek a long trek to an isolated campsite, consider staying here in the depths of the canyon's deepest exposed rock layer. The river has deposited dunes that provide a soft camping surface and a pleasant beach. The mighty Granite Rapid washes into a large eddy that is great for swimming on hot afternoons, but don't underestimate the frigid water, even in the middle of summer. This is a prime campsite if you want to try out the Colorado River's famous trout fishing, but don't expect easy catches in the murky water.

There are a few things to be aware of when planning a trip to Granite Rapid. There is no quick way to access the campsite, so you must take Tonto Trail to Monument Creek and then travel 1.5 miles down a rocky wash to the river. While you can also traverse the riverbank from Hermit Creek Camp, this is not the recommended route. Also, note that there are no toilet facilities at Granite Rapid Camp, so be sure to dispose of waste properly. There is a pit toilet at Monument Creek, so consider taking advantage of this opportunity when you pass through en route to the river. Restoration projects are underway to reduce erosion and improve natural habitat. Do not disturb any tools or wire plant guards that you find near the campsite. Finally, this site is sometimes used for docking by boating parties, so be prepared to share beach space with river travelers. They are likely to be well stocked on food and other goodies, so if you treat them well they may share with you!

Use of the area does require a permit, which is available from the Grand Canyon Backcountry Information Center. Group camping is available here with a maximum size of 11 people in a group each night. Additionally, there are two regular sites that allow six people per party, bringing the total capacity to 23 people per night. Reserve well in advance (up to four months) for the best chance of securing a permit on the date(s) you want. Permits include a flat, non-refundable fee of $10, plus $5 per person per night.
