Lost Dutchman State Park Campground is a great location for a weekend getaway from nearby Phoenix or a destination for a longer stay (14 days maximum) for those who want to experience the beautiful Sonoran Desert. While not a large park, Lost Dutchman State Park borders the Tonto National Forest and Superstition Wilderness and is an excellent jumping-off point for hikes of any length.

The campground itself has spacious and private campsites spread over several loop roads. About half of the sites have electricity and water hookups (no sewer), and there is a dump station and potable water on site. The lower numbered sites (under 40) tend to be smaller and closer together, though this is all relative because it would be hard to find a "bad" site in the entire campground. Nearly all sites have spectacular views of the Superstition Mountains, and some even have distant views of the Phoenix city lights at night. Reservations are strongly advised, especially for the sites with hookups, as this is a very popular campground.

Several trails depart right from the campground, including the 6-mile there-and-back trail that leads to the top of the Flatiron formation for 2,800 feet of elevation gain. Other loop trails in the 2- to 3-mile range all afford great views, wildflowers in season, and plenty of great desert flora such as saguaro cactus, cholla cactus, ocotillo, and palo verde.

Pretty spectacular rugged mountains cut through the Arizona horizon.
